Do you experience an afternoon slump, especially after eating lunch? This slump can significantly reduce productivity in the second half of your work schedule. However, there are ways that you can avoid it to get the most out of your day. Here are our tips.
Get Plenty of Sleep
Getting plenty of sleep will give you more energy throughout the day and help you to avoid experiencing an afternoon slump. So make sure that you are getting enough hours of sleep and that it is good quality sleep. If you are not feeling refreshed when you get up in the morning, find the root cause and resolve the issue.
Consuming Coffee and Tea
If you drink coffee, it is recommended that you drink only a small cup in the morning. Drinking coffee, or other drinks containing caffeine, late in the day can interfere with sleep. However, since green tea has a lower amount of caffeine than coffee, you can drink it at lunchtime to give you an extra energy boost.
Stay Hydrated with Water
Since you wake up dehydrated from not drinking anything during sleep, it is a good idea to start the day by first drinking a glass of water. Having some warm water with lemon is a good option. Also, keep yourself hydrated with water throughout the day. Keep a water bottle or two with you when you are doing things outside of your home.
How to Handle Lunch
Eating a large lunch can cause an afternoon slump. So if you eat lunch, consume a small one containing mostly proteins and vegetables, a small number of carbs, and no sugars.
Another option for avoiding afternoon fatigue is to eat a breakfast that is large enough so that you can skip lunch to avoid the afternoon slump. Consult a medical professional to see if this approach is right for you.
A good option for your breakfast meal is having eggs and whole wheat bread. You can also eat a vegetable, such as an avocado.
Having some healthy fats with each meal, such as avocados, pecans, pistachios, or peanut butter, can help you to feel satisfied longer.
Exercise Routine
Doing some light stretching in the morning and taking a short walk is a good way to start the day. Also exercising during lunchtime can help to keep your energy level up.
Use Apple Cider Vinegar
Taking 1 tbs. of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water before you eat can help you to digest your food better to avoid afternoon tiredness and to help stabilize your blood sugar levels.
