How to Improve Your Sleep in 5 Simple Steps

Are you waking up in the morning all tired as if you didn’t get enough rest? Is your life or business starting to be affected by the lack of high-quality sleep? If sleep, or the lack of it, has begun to turn your life upside down, then there’s a high possibility that your bedroom is no longer your sleep sanctuary. By following these steps, you’ll be able to convert your bedroom into a room that will help you get quality sleep.

Step 1: Change your mattress
According to research performed by Duke University, mattresses do affect the quality of sleep a person gets. However, it is not the quality or design of the mattress that affects sleep, but how the body relaxes on a particular surface. Therefore, if you’re suddenly finding it difficult to sleep at night, it is possible that your mattress is no longer suitable for your body type.  Try to find a mattress that your body can agree with.

Step 2: Clear your bedroom of distractions
Do you have television, radio, or a computer in your bedroom? If so, then understand that these items can distract you from quality sleep. In fact, they don’t even need to be switched on. The fact that these items are in your room is enough for the brain to unconsciously think of something you can be doing with them instead of focusing on relaxing and sleeping. For example, a computer in your room makes you think of emails that may be coming in, thus distracting you from getting rest.

Step 3: Soft lights or no lights
While the majority of us sleep better with the lights off, some need a bit of light in the room.  If you’re suddenly finding it hard to fall asleep with the lights off or on every night, try doing the opposite. If you usually sleep with the lights off but still can’t get quality sleep, try leaving them on for a few nights to see if it improves your sleep.

Step 4: Use scents or soft music
One of the reasons why falling asleep can suddenly become so difficult is because you’re finding it hard to relax. There may be something on your mind, or your body may be a bit too tired which can make your brain continue to work even when you want it to relax. Before you head to bed, try playing some soft music or using scents that will help you relax.  Studies have proven that scents and soft music can help improve your sleep.

Step 5: Keep your bedroom clean and organized all the time
Another reason why you might not be getting the sleep you need is that there are things that are out of place in your bedroom. If the room is somehow out of balance, then this will present a distraction, even if you’re not actually thinking of it.

For example, have you ever felt that something wasn’t right and you just couldn’t figure out what it was?  Most of the time, it is your unconscious self that has noticed this discrepancy, and it is trying to tell you.  So, to help you sleep better, make sure that everything in your bedroom is in order before you hit the sack.
