How to Use Your Business Card as a Marketing Tool to Expand Your Network

If you want to succeed in business, it’s imperative that you know how to establish a network. The bigger your network, the more influential you’ll become in the business community. Your influence will be one of the primary growth drivers for your business. But in order to build influence, you’ll first need to let people know that you exist. One of the best ways to do this is to market your business using one of the basic tools every businessperson should have: the business card.

Many aspiring entrepreneurs don’t even consider the business card as a marketing tool but it is one of the most powerful tools an entrepreneur can have in his or her inventory. But only if it is used correctly. Below are a few basic rules to remember in the correct usage of a business card.

1. Keep it simple

The general rule when designing business cards is to keep the design simple and clear. The card should include the company logo, business name, address, name of the person, title, and contact information, including phone number, email address, and website. Remember to make the font large enough so that people can easily read the text. Also, use style and colors that will make you stand out. If possible, it is also good to have a picture of yourself on the card, which helps people to remember who you are if they spoke to you in person.

2. Never leave your home without a business card

An opportunity to expand your network can occur just about anywhere. You could strike up a conversation with someone in the coffee shop, grocery store, bus station, airport, or even while waiting for a taxi. These opportunities might go to waste if you forgot to bring your business card with you, so make sure you have several on hand wherever you go.

3. Don’t treat your business card like a brochure

Only hand out your business card if you believe there’s a genuine opportunity to connect with another person. Using your business cards like brochures or flyers usually doesn’t work and is often a waste of resources.

4. Be professional when handing out your card

In Japan, there’s a strict etiquette when giving and receiving cards. A business card should be given with both hands with the information facing the receiver. The receiver should also receive with both hands, review the information and store the card in a cardholder if one is available. The process isn’t as strict in other countries, but you should at least be sincere when giving or receiving a business card.

5. Never hand out business cards with scribbled corrections

If you need to change or add information on your business card, make sure to have it reprinted. Scribbling down new information is unprofessional. Doing so could actually hurt your attempt to increase your network.

Expanding your business network in person is straightforward if you know how to utilize the marketing tools at your disposal properly, especially your business card. People you meet will appreciate your professionalism and will gladly be a part of your network.
