6 Tips to Manage Stress and Boost Productivity

WholeLife Matrix: Personal Awareness / Self

“The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another.”
— William James

Today, we have many things to juggle in life such as career, family, and technology. We need strategies to manage our stress levels so that it does not become overwhelming. Otherwise we can lose our energy or experience negative impacts on our health such as upset stomach, headaches or migraines.  In this article, we offer some tips for preventing and dealing with stress so that you can live a more relaxing and happy life.

1. Put things into Perspective
One of the best ways to handle stress is to shift your thinking and not take life too seriously.  Instead, see life as a journey. When you keep the big picture in mind, it will help to prevent unnecessary drama or over-analysis of things that are not as important as they may seem.  Also, ask yourself if a problem will matter in a month or a year.

2. Delegate
Often, we feel like we need to do everything ourselves.  We may think that we can do a better job than others can or we may want to save money. But time is money too and there are only 24 hours in a day.  So, in the long run, you can actually save a tremendous amount of money and time by hiring someone to assist you with various tasks.

3. Relax on the Weekend
If you have your own business, you may be tempted to work on the weekends and check and respond to emails on the weekends. But by doing this, you don’t give your mind and body a chance to relax.  It is good to take a break from technology and allow yourself to recharge.

4. Do One Thing at a Time
In both your business and in your personal life, you will feel better by doing one thing at a time instead of trying to multi-task. When your brain does not need to switch back and forth between tasks it can focus on doing quality work on each task.

5. Use Clear and Concise Communication
If there is something that you are unsure of, ask. This can avoid a lot of miscommunication or misunderstanding. Also, when emailing, it is good to communicate clearly and concisely what you need to avoid a lot of back and forth communication.

6. Keep Your Workspace Simple
They say that a cluttered space is a reflection of a cluttered mind. When your workspace and home are simple and clean you will feel more relaxed and less stressed. You will also have more space and be able to find things more easily. Think of the Buddhist monk. The reason why Buddhist monks keep things simple is to keep a relaxed and focused mind.
