WholeLife Matrix: Personal Awareness / Self / Psychological Awareness
“Positive thinking evokes more energy, more initiative, and more happiness.”
— Anonymous
We are often told to “think positive” to feel better and have more happiness in our lives. But to get the most benefit from thinking positive, we must also let go of negative influences, limiting beliefs and habits. We also need to form habits and rituals that will develop and reinforce positive thinking. There are specific things you can do on a regular basis that will help you be as positive as possible. We offer some tips below.
It is important to remove negative influences from our lives that impact our mindset and mood. These may be things you are watching, reading, or even negative people. Negativity attracts more of the same, and the more of it you have, the more you will worry and have bad feelings. So it is important to eliminate the negative things in your life to make more room for the positive things.
Visualization should be a part of your daily routine. Each day, spend some time visualizing how you want your day to go and visualize the results of the things you want to accomplish for the big goals in your life.
Doing a random act of kindness is something that can benefit your well-being while, at the same time, making someone else’s day special. A random act of kindness may include things such as writing thank you letters, giving flowers to your partner or bringing them their favorite meal, or paying for someone’s coffee. Recognize people who don’t usually get attention, like a security guard. If someone looks sad, you can also help boost their mood by doing something kind for them like buying them a coffee.
Another way to increase your happiness is to use a daily gratitude journal. Each day write down something good that happened to you that day and something you are thankful for and review your list on a regular basis. This will increase your appreciation for the things in your life. When you are grateful, you will also attract more things to be grateful for. Gratitude also replaces negative emotions like fear, jealousy or anger – you cannot feel grateful and feel these negative emotions at the same time.
Giving hugs or an affectionate touch when appropriate can also increase positive thoughts and happiness. It helps us feel more connected to others and boosts well-being. When a spouse goes the extra mile, give them a hug to let them know they are appreciated.
Maintain open communication with people and ask questions that let them know you care about them, such as asking your spouse how their day was or asking your kids how things are going at school. We are often distracted by our phones, the internet, or TV, but it is important to be fully present to the things in our lives. Meditation can help you refocus and increase awareness.
Continuing to grow your psychological awareness will also help you to accomplish goals in your life and become more fulfilled. In the WholeLife Matrix, psychological awareness includes:
1. Introspection
2. Understanding
3. Acceptance
4. Resolution
