WholeLife Matrix: Personal Awareness / Self
“The creative adult is the child who has survived.”
— Ursula K. Le Guin
Creativity is a major component of success. It helps us come up with new ideas and better ways of doing things. A business starts out as an idea in someone’s mind that is later build upon. How can we increase our creativity to accomplish more? Below are some ideas:
As Ursula K. Le Guin stated: “The creative adult is the child who has survived.” Why is creativity lost? As children, we are full of imagination and creativity and believe we can accomplish great things. But as we grow up, we do less and less creative projects in school, we are told to do things in specific ways, and we start to doubt ourselves as we are told that we can’t do certain things. And eventually, we come to believe that creativity is just for people who are artsy, such as people who draw or write songs. But there are various forms of creativity such as finding a creative solution to a problem, which we all do at times.
Let the creative work of others inspire your own creativity. Listening to music is one way to increase creative thoughts. Classical music such as Mozart has been found to increase creativity and focus. You might also visit some museums to get artistic inspiration. Watching some comedy can also improve your mood and creativity. I keep a list of funny videos and movies to watch to boost my mood.
List problems and ideas. Ask yourself how you might solve a problem, and list solutions. Keep a notebook handy because more ideas will occur to you during the day when you don’t expect it. If you want to create a new product or service, then it is essential to study the work of others and list problems and ideas. What has been done before and where might you make improvements? Could you make the product easier to use, more attractive, portable, etc.
Build a network of positive friends who you can share ideas with. Sometimes getting the opinion of someone can give you new insights and lead you to more ideas.
Write freely and by hand whenever possible. Writing by hand can increase creativity because we often use our hands in creative processes such as knitting and cooking. When you brainstorm, write down anything that comes to mind without worrying about accuracy. This is a good way to get your ideas flowing and avoid writer’s block. You can later revise or add to your ideas.
Daydreaming and meditating help to relax and quiet the mind so that it can focus and naturally find creative solutions. Some of the benefits of meditation include: helping you to feel more connected, improving brain function and sleep, improving metabolism and weight loss, improving immunity and attention span.
Change your routine, spend time in the great outdoors and get enough rest and exercise. Living a healthy lifestyle will boost the functioning of your body, mind, and creativity. Changing your routine and being exposed to new experiences can help simulate new ideas.
