What Should You Include In a Newsletter?

WholeLife Matrix: Financial Viability – Marketing / Sales

“The value of an idea lies in the using of it.” —Thomas Edison, General Electric Co-founder

It has often been said by marketers that “the money is in the email list”.  By building an email list and developing a relationship with your subscribers, they will come to like and trust you.  Then, when you want to sell a product or service, they will be more likely to buy from you.

One common mistake that people make with email lists is not communicating with their subscribers for months.  When you don’t communicate with your subscribers for a long time, you lose your influence and many people on your list will forget who you are and that they had signed up for your list a long time ago.  Then, when you send them a message, they will consider it spam and remove themselves from the subscription. You can prevent this from happening by sending out a newsletter on a consistent basis.

One reason that people don’t send out a newsletter on a regular basis is because they are not sure about what to include in a newsletter.  It helps to create a newsletter template with a specific structure that you can use each time you send out the newsletter.  We offer some tips here for what you can include in that structure.

It is a good idea to hire a designer to create a professional looking template for you that represents your company brand.  At the top of your template, you can include your logo and social media icons.  You can also include some of the same links that are on the top of your website.  Use good, clear pictures throughout your template.  Your newsletter can start out with an inspirational quote.

A common element to include in a newsletter is a feature article section.  This section usually includes the beginning of an article you have written on your blog, and links to the rest of the article.  This strategy helps to get more visitors to your website where they can explore other things you offer.  You can also include a section of your template that shows some additional blogs that people can read on your site.

Your newsletter can also have a section featuring a specific topic or idea of the month.  For example, if you are a chef, you might have a section for “Recipe of the Month”.

Another idea is to include a book review or recommended reading list. If you have written your own book, you can feature your book in your template.  You can also feature other products or services you offer and can include some testimonials. You can include an “About” section that describes what you do and display badges that increase customer confidence.  For example, if you are a life coach, you could include the “International Association of Professional Life Coaches” badge.

It is also a good idea to include a “What We Recommend” section.  In this section, you can recommend other businesses.  In return, they can also recommend you in their newsletters.  This can get you many more views, especially if the people recommending you have a large newsletter list.

Lastly, don’t forget to invite people to connect with you through email, phone, and social media.  Also encourage people to forward your newsletter to others who may benefit from it.
