WholeLife Matrix: Personal Awareness / Self
“Meditation can reintroduce you to the part that’s been missing.”
— Russell Simmons
Many leaders and famous people meditate and recommend meditation to others, including Ray Dalio, Oprah, and Tim Ferris. What makes meditation so important to them? In this article, we will discuss what meditation is and how it can benefit your life.
We have many things that happen during the day that stir our emotions and cause us to lose focus. Maybe someone cut you off in traffic or you have a deadline that you are in a rush to meet. The purpose of meditation is to calm the turbulent waves of your life and get you back to the deeper depths of calm and focus that are at the core of who you are. Meditation allows you to focus on and enjoy the present moment rather than worry about the past or future. When you are calm and focused, you are better able to put things in perspective and have clarity, concentration and a positive attitude. Meditation helps you to achieve these things so you can live a more abundant and joyful life.
The most basic type of meditation involves simply sitting and clearing your mind of any thoughts and just calmly breathing. Although this sounds simple, it is often challenging to beginners because thoughts of worry or things needing to be done inevitably enter the mind. It takes discipline to let those thoughts go and continue the meditation. Mindfulness-based stress reduction meditation incorporates the focus on inhalation and exhalation of your breath and body scan. Body scan is a process that involves focusing attention on parts of the body starting from the toes up to the head, releasing any stress from the body parts.
There are various types of meditation. Transcendental Meditation is a popular type of meditation among celebrities. It was originated by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and gained popularity when it was practiced by the Beatles and other celebrities. In this type of meditation, the meditator’s regular thinking patterns are “transcended” to the level of pure consciousness. During the meditation, the meditator uses a mantra, which are sounds or words that are focused on. A mantra is given by a certified instructor.
Many physical and mental benefits of meditation have been found. Some of the physical benefits include the lowering of high blood pressure, decrease of tension-related pain, an improved immune system and a higher energy level. Some of the mental benefits include decreased anxiety and increased happiness, creativity, emotional stability, clarity, focus, and a development of intuition. It is recommended that meditation be practiced every day for maximum benefits.
In the WholeLife Matrix, meditation is related to spiritual practice which includes:
1. Gratitude
2. Personal Prayer
