Sail Through Company Parties Like a Seasoned Professional with These 4 Tips

office-parties

Going to a company party is not everyone’s mug of eggnog. Holiday celebrations, especially, can cause anxiety in even the most unflappable of office-goers. Looking like a true professional who knows how to have fun without going overboard doesn’t have to be hard. Here are some tips to help you get through your next office party or seasonal celebration with enviable ease and grace:

Dress for Success

Understand the theme of the party and venue to help you narrow down on the best choices for party wear. Consult co-workers and the party organizer to help you decide on the dress code. Some general rules of etiquette apply to all office parties regardless of theme or venue.

Aim to look professional but not dowdy – remember it’s a party. Avoid too much flash and bling. You don’t want to stand out at an office party for all the wrong reasons. When in doubt, wear solid professional colors like black or blue and dress up or down as needed with holiday-friendly accessories. Aim for business casual, but extra-put-together.

Eat, Drink, and Make Merry Like a Pro

Do not go overboard on the alcohol and the food. Eat and drink conservative amounts. You also don’t want to be the compulsive nibbler. Always take the host’s lead on food and drink.

When it comes to party conversation, keep it light and fun. This is not the appropriate time or venue to discuss problems in the workplace. Look at the event as an opportunity to get to know your colleagues a little better in a slightly less formal space. If your office party involves colleagues from other departments, make an effort to mingle. Try not to stick to just your side of the turf. Remember to be a good listener and not completely own the conversation.

Taking an Appropriate Gift

It may be considered appropriate and thoughtful to bring a gift for the host or hostess of the party. Unless you know the person really well and can confidently bring him or her something they will like, stick to a general gift such as a gift card that will allow them to get what they want.

If you’re at a party where a gift exchange is expected, understand the expected value of gifts beforehand. Have the organizers set a price range in advance to avoid awkward moments. When engaging in gift exchanges, remember to provide gifts that are thoughtful but not over-the-top or controversial. Stick to conservative choices.

Ending on a High Note

It is important to look relaxed but professional from start to finish at an office party. The way you exit the party is just as important as the way you make your presence felt during the celebration. Remember to thank the host or hostess and engage in some light banter before you leave. If possible, do not be the first person to leave and do not wait to be the last person to leave. Look for cues that the host or hostess is ready to wind down, and time your exit for after others are starting to leave.

An office party doesn’t have to be a nerve-wracking experience. You can sail through any party like a seasoned pro if you apply these tips and are determined to put your best mistletoe forward.
