6 Ways to Boost Your Confidence

WholeLife Matrix: Personal Awareness / Self

“Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.”
— Helen Keller

With practice, you can develop a high level of self-confidence and improve the quality of your life. When you believe in yourself, others will too and more opportunities will come your way.  Self-confident people believe that they can overcome challenges and tend to see life as wonderful adventure.  They respect themselves, are admired by others and inspire confidence.

1. Surround Yourself with Positive People
Positive and supportive people will help to boost your confidence. So spend as much time as you can with positive people and as little time as possible with negative individuals. Being around positive people will help you to stop focusing on problems in your life and instead help you to focus on solutions.

2. Learn Effective Communication Techniques
Learning how to effectively communicate with others will increase your confidence and reduce your stress. For example, many people don’t know how to say no to something that they don’t want to do. This causes anxiety for them. By learning phrases to use when communicating with others, you can make interactions more pleasant and achieve better outcomes. To respectfully say “no” to a request, Bob Burg suggests saying “Thank you so much for asking, while it’s not something I’d like to do, please know how honored I am to be asked.”

3. Use Powerful Body Language
Sitting up and using positive body language will help you to look and feel more confident. Speak clearly and slowly and maintain a friendly attitude and eye contact. Also remember to smile. Choosing to wear clothes that make you feel good about yourself and attractive will also make you feel more confident and make others perceive you as confident.

4. Practice and Prepare
Whether you have a presentation to do, a job interview, date, or other activity that requires confidence, practice and preparation will go a long way in making you feel confident so that you can deliver the best results. When you are well prepared, you will also be able to better handle issues that may come up.

5. Create rituals that Combat Negativity
One of the ways that you can combat negativity is to create a lists of things that you are thankful for and things that you are proud of about yourself. Posts these lists somewhere where you can see them and they will help to give you inspiration and make you feel positive about your life. You can also create a list of things you are thankful for at the end of each day.

6. Monitor Your Thoughts
A lack of confidence is often a result of negative thoughts that we have during the day, which can become self-fulfilling prophecies. Catch yourself as soon as you are thinking a negative thought and turn it around into something positive.
